Douglas, a part of Worcester County, is home to just over 8,000 residents. The town was incorporated in 1746, which is also when it was given its current name. Previously, the town had been known as New Sherburn from the original English settlers.

The Forest is designated as Massachusetts Wildland, providing visitors with opportunities to hike, fish, picnic, and make use of the beach at Lake Wallum.
